2016 is in full swing and so is Lagunitas Brewing Company’s OneHitter Series which features a new limited-edition beer every month. Because these brews are on a “drink ‘em till they’re gone” basis these OneHitters are a hot ticket item for those who love local craft beer and want to be up on the latest trends. First up to bat for the 2016 lineup is their Bitter Oats Ale which Lagunitas describes as:
Ale Brewed With Boatloads of Oats and a Mountain of Hops. This big boozy blonde was brewed with a boatload of oats, giving it a creamy, sweet mouthfeel with a hoppy blast. It’s like a powdered sugar doughnut topped with deliciously bitter, danky resinous hops. Chow down!
I first tried Bitter Oats Ale in the Lagunitas tasting room and fell in love with its syrupy mouthfeel and aggressive hop forward taste. Just like biting into a powdered sugar doughnut I was left craving more! Lagunitas describes this beer as a “big boozy blonde” but in true Lagunitas form, this beer doesn’t fit into the typical style profile of a blonde ale. Blondes are characterized as smooth and drinkable with an ABV between 4 and 5 while Bitter Oats Ale boasts a boozy 10.5 ABV with a strong, bitter hops flavor. This beer is delicious, but not the type I’d choose to sip on a sunny beach.
Bitter Oats Ale has a strong apricot, pine and honey aroma giving this beer an enchanting complexity. The “boatloads of oats” lend to this ale’s syrupy thick consistency which made the “mountains of hops” palatable on the tongue. Bitter Oats Ale was a wonderful beer to warm up with on a chilly Sonoma County evening and I’m glad I got to enjoy it before it’s gone. Go pick yourself up a bottle of Bitter Oats Ale or enjoy a pint at Lagunitas Brewery in Petaluma, CA. We can’t wait to see the awesome OneHitter Lagunitas releases in February.
